Nice travel system, not perfect but still happy 8 months later!4
I spent countless hours researching travel systems before choosing this one. This was for my 3rd child and I’ve had several different strollers with my first 2 kids so I knew what I wanted/didn’t want in a travel system. What I loved first about this one was the fabric! The colors are great and the fabric is soft and suede-like which was hard to find. Another hard to find feature this stroller/seat has is the rotating canopy-you can shield the baby from the sun from any angle. (not sure why all systems don’t offer this feature) Another feature I looked for was a fully reclining seat-has it. Large storage basket, cup/stuff holders are great.
OK, I can’t say that the system is perfect….things I don’t like about it: The canopy has a large window that allows the sun through so it’s not perfect in totally shading baby at all times (some systems have fabric that can cover this, but not the Townsend) so I’ve had to use a blanket to cover the window from time to time. The basket is hard to get into when the seat is fully reclined…it does drop down for easier access but I’ve found this difficult to do. And the stroller is huge and will take up alot of space in the back of any vehicle….but that is what you’re going to get with a travel system and I was ok with it. I really do like this system….aside from the open window in the canopy it has all the features I was looking for in a color and fabric that I love.
12/29/09 Now that I’ve been using this system for 8 months just thought I would add on…..I do overall really like this travel system. A couple things to point out is: because it is so huge I did go out and buy an additional Chicco umbrella stroller for the times we just don’t have the extra room in the back our Acadia for the GINORMOUS Graco. (like when we went on vacation or I’m shopping with my SIL and she’s got to bring her stroller too, or to our older son’s soccer or baseball games when we have other equipment to haul around with us). Again, I knew the stroller was big when I bought it and there would be times it would not be practical to use. If you have a small car or live in the city using public transportation then this is not the stroller for you.
And so far the Snugride 32 has been no problem at all–I just figured out how to adjust the straps on the bottom to loosen more to accomodate my 8 month old son. Yes it’s a bigger infant seat and heavy to lug around with baby in it but what do you expect? Even smaller infant seats are heavy when you have a 15+lb infant in them! If it’s too hard to carry then leave it in the car. I like the option of leaving the baby in his seat if he’s still sleeping while we’re on the go–makes shopping trips/going out a whole lot easier if I don’t have to disturb him by taking him out of his seat.
Anyway, I have kept an eye out for that “other” travel system that tops what I have now…..and I still haven’t found one! I am happy with this purchase. :)

Ok, but much better options out there!3
This system definitely has it’s pluses. It is stylish, includes both the car seat and stroller, and is a smooth riding stroller that appears to be very comfortable for baby. Not so much for mom though. It is very heavy and bulky. It took up almost the entire trunk of my car, and was very heavy and cumbersome to remove from the trunk, especially with your hands full with baby or diaper bag. If you are looking for a stroller to take out for walks, and leave at home, this is probably a great option for you. If you are out and about a lot, or are planning to use this for things such a shopping, or going to other places with limited space, this is not the stroller for you. While going to the mall, it was almost impossible to maneuver this between clothes racks. I ended up passing this stroller along to my pregnant sister who was not even able to lift it out of the trunk herself. I ended up buying the Graco Mosaic stroller which I love. It is very compact, folder very easily, can be lifted one handed, and does allow for a carseat to be clipped in. The Travel System was good for me for a month or two, but save your money, and definitely try out some other strollers.

well worth the money5
this is what i like to refer to as “the cadillac” of strollers. my 5 month old loves to ride in it. he loves to see what’s going on as we roll through town with him facing forward, and also doesn’t mind facing the other way when we keep him in the car seat (i like to look at him too!) the wheels are big and sturdy and it rides very smooth, which is saying alot since we live in the rough terrain of alaska. its also a great help when traveling, i took the stroller with through the airport so he could lay down and sleep when he needed. the only problem i have had is that the hook to keep it folded got lost on the first leg of our flight, so now when i pack it up, it kind of unfolds itself when set upright, but other than that, i love it and am very pleased with the whold system.

Customer Reviews:

Quality camera, responsive, great 25-125mm f/2.8-5.9 lens4
The exemplary build quality gives this camera a luxury feel. The camera is dense, feels hefty for its size when picked up, unlike many similar cameras that feel like a piece of plastic. This is a fine example of Japanese craftsmanship. It is fast and very responsive in operation. The lens is fantastic, 25mm (effective) wide angle is rare among such cameras, significantly wider angle than the 28mm of the FX33. In wide angle lenses every mm counts. Thankfully, the max aperture is back to f/2.8 – the FX35 maxed at f/3.3. The lens is sharp edge to edge with very little, if any, in the way of distortion and chromatic aberration. Certainly, the lens is better than the sensor. The wide aperture (f/2.8) at the wide angle is great for low light [The lenses on the FX35, TZ3, TZ4 and TZ5 are not as fast].

The flash is weak [manufacturers under-power the flash in order to gain on the "shots per battery charge" scale.].

Hints: In low light, including indoor shots with flash, use the wide angle (zoom out) to make use of the f/2.8 aperture, and you’ll get fewer dark underexposed pictures. Stick with ISO 100 and 200. Keep ISO 400 for emergencies, but never go beyond 400. In auto-ISO mode, you can limit the max ISO. You probably read a lot about image noise. Yes, it is there, but you will not see it in 4×6 or 8×10 prints. You won’t see it on a typical 20″ monitor (12″x16″) when viewing the whole image on the screen. You will see it if you view part of the image 1:1, which amounts to close up inspection of a 57″x38″ print (assuming the monitor is running at 1024×768). Those wanting 57″x38″ prints will be using a medium-format digital back, not this camera anyway. Reduce the resolution to 3 or 5 mp and you’ll see less noise (per pixel), and save hard disk space!

I recommend an extra battery and a 4 GB memory card (minimum).

Optical image stabilization is very effective indeed. Video (1280x720x30) is very good.

I took out one star for: 1) Lack of full manual controls, 2) sensor noise.
This camera needs a larger sensor.

The more expensive TZ3, TZ4 and TZ5 lack the f/2.8 aperture (they max at f/3.3).

If you like the size and build-quality of the FX37, but want a better picture-taking machine, look at the LX3. It has a larger sensor, manual controls, RAW, and an excellent 24-60mm (equiv) f/2-2.8 lens. The LX3 is destined to be a big hit.

First Impressions very positive5
When Panasonic announced their new cameras, I was interested in this model for its size, lens and image size. They have ceased the race for megapixel king and I was hoping image quality and not megapixels would become important.

Camera is 10MP, and has a 5x wide angle zoom. Plenty of MP for most uses and users.

The 5X zoom, while not the smoothest when zooming, the range is really appreciated. From a wide to a nice short tele! Very useful. On of my favorite things to do on vacation is to make “two-fers” self portraits of my wife and I. Not easy to do with most point and shoots, not wide enough to capture people and ambiance. This one fits the bill nicely!

First impressions: Camera is smaller than I had expected. This is a plus. It is the same size dimensionally as the Sony Cybershot T-5 it replaces. Also a plus. It is lighter than the Sony, and does not have that “solid” feeling. I consider this a neutral or slight minus.

Fast on the Draw, acceptable shutter lag from this class of camera (I use a D2X as well). Facial recognition focus seems to work too.

One of the most easy to navigate and use menus I have come across. It is distilled to a bare minimum.

Wish it captured RAW data.

I had been concerned, and started to have buyers remorse before I received the camera when I read some reviews of the predecessor about noise in poorly illuminated settings. This does not seem to be a problem. My abbreviated testing in low light has very acceptable results. (Your mileage may vary of course.)

For the price, this seems to be quite a nice camera for a carry everywhere camera.

Great Sharp Small5
I’m a professional photographer with 25 yrs experience. Came down to the FX 37.. Canon sd 990 or the
Sony dswc T-77.
Sent the Canon right back. Clever design, too bulky, and guaranteed to slip through your fingers.
Sony, nice and slim, but too many menus, plus the touch screen is awkward and will drive you insane.
The FX 37 is very small, very fast, push buttons, and a 25mm wide-angle lens. Plus it extends to a nice telephoto…125mm. All you will ever need and POCKETABLE. Have the camera with you. Never miss the shot.
Beautiful construction. Feels solid. Very easy to shoot. Focus tracking. Leica lens. HD video. Excellent prints.
It’s a no brainer.

Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-FX37 digital camera features a 25mm ultra wide-angle Leica DC lens, enabling users to capture almost double the viewing space at the same shooting distance as compared to 35mm cameras. The 10.1-megapixel FX37, capable of High Definition video recording, also includes a powerful 5x optical zoom while maintaining a sleek, ultra-compact body and expands Intelligent Auto Mode (iA), Panasonic’s system of intuitive technologies that help you capture better photos.

The FX37 comes with several of Panasonic’s proprietary features, including the new AF (auto focus) Tracking function, which expands the iA system. AF Tracking automatically tracks the subject in the frame by locking it into focus, making it easier to capture sharp, well-focused photos. With AF Tracking, the FX37 continually monitors the light source and automatically activates the backlight compensation function if it detects that the light source is behind the subject. AF Tracking also increases Face Detection accuracy, allowing for crisp, sharp-focused shots even if the subject’s face moves — or turns to a profile.

When the FX37 is set to iA mode, the following technologies engage automatically; no settings need to be made:

  • Intelligent Exposure — Helps prevents photos from being under- or over-exposed by instantly analyzing the framed image and adjusting the brightness in areas that are too dark because of dim lighting, backlighting or the use of the flash. The camera will automatically adjust the brightness accordingly.
  • Digital Red-eye Correction– This feature helps to eliminate the red-eye problem that sometimes results when taking flash shots at night. Incorporated into the camera, the built-in flash emits a small preliminary flash before the main flash, detects red-eye and will digitally correct it.
  • MEGA O.I.S. — Gyrosensors detect hand-shake and the lens system shifts to compensate, helping to prevent hand-shake from creating a blurry image.
  • Intelligent ISO — Determines if the photo subject is moving and changes the ISO setting and shutter speed accordingly, thus giving a blur-free photo.
  • Intelligent Scene Selector — Senses the ambient conditions, recognizes the shooting environment and will automatically select the appropriate scene mode from: Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode. This intuitive technology helps the consumer use the most common scene modes that are built into the camera, but often go unused, without making any manual adjustments.
  • Face Detection — Detects faces in the frame (up to 15 faces), even if they are moving, and selects optimal focus and exposure settings so portraits come out clear.
  • Quick AF (Auto Focus) — Starts focus on the subject by just pointing the camera at the subject, thus minimizing the AF time.

The Lumix FX37, which includes 50 MB of internal memory, also features High Definition (HD) video recording capabilities, shooting with a resolution of 1280 x 720p at 30fps. Still photos can also be shot in a 16:9 aspect ratio for optimal viewing on an HDTV. Panasonic VIERA Plasma and LCD HDTVs also feature an integrated SD Memory Card slot, allowing users to easily view photos by simply inserting the SD Memory Card into the convenient SD Card slot built into the TV. Consumers can also enjoy watching videos in HD quality and view still images by connecting the DMC-FX37 via an optional Panasonic component cable (DMW-HDC2).

The new Venus Engine IV supports a faster response time, allowing the Lumix FX37 to shoot 2.5 shots per second at full resolution and six shots per second in High-Speed Burst mode. The shutter release time lag is as short as 0.005 second, making it easier to capture spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. The high-performance engine enables the camera to shoot up to 310 photos on a single battery charge.

Additional features of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX37 include:

  • Image Leveling — When a captured image “leans” to the right or left because the camera was held at a slight angle when the photo was taken, the Image Leveling function rotates the image to straighten it and crops the unnecessary edges. No computer needed!
  • Scene Modes — The DMC-FX37 offers 25 scene modes to address the unique needs of a variety of shooting situations. The new Pin Hole and Film Grain modes add unique, film camera-like effects and ambiences. Additionally, the Transform mode trims and stretches the image to virtually transform the subject to appear slimmer or stretched wider.

Well built but very heavy…3
This bike rack is finished very nicely with very few exposed nuts and bolts. It comes with anti-sway supports that fold down and attach to the vertical seat post tube on your bike and keep the bike from rocking back and forth while traveling.

It is also very well built but it has a few flaws that are worth mentioning. The integrated locking cable would be handy but it was VERY difficult to stuff back into its storage compartment (located in the vertical support arm) but your mileage may vary. The cable felt like it was longer than its storage space so much pushing and twisting was needed to put it back.

The rack is also very large and VERY heavy, much more so than would appear in the pictures. This could make it a bit awkward to install on your vehicle but it should be very sturdy because it uses a threaded bolt to attach itself to the hitch.

I also noticed that the provided lock for the hitch bolt wouldn’t engage if the safety pin was in place. It works fine without the pin but installing the cotter pin doesn’t provide enough surface for the lock to grip onto apparently. This could just be a flaw with the one I had so you might have better luck.

I never actually tested this rack with a bike because I wasn’t able to install it on my car. The part that goes into the receiver hitch was too long for the hitch on my Honda so the locking bolt holes wouldn’t line up. The Thule Ridgeline appears to be very similar to this model (and hopefully has a shorter hitch mount =).

Yakima Flipside5
Excellent – performs as advertised. The flip side feature works great – the deadbolt and lock work as advertised. 2 areas for improvement: Need a strap for the front wheel to secure it (I use a bungee). And there is a little wiggle in rack – but overall it is very secure. A good product

Yakima FlipSide 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1.25 and 2-Inch Receiver) (Purchased on 03/18/2009)5
Yakima FlipSide 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack 1.25 and 2-Inch Receiver is very well constructed and has so far withstood the weather and is very stable. I really like the convenience of being able to access the cargo area of my Sion xB by easily flipping the bike rack to the left or to the right and folding the carrier arms down when not in use.

Kicker iK501 iPhone/iTouch Best iPod Speakers period!5
Kicker has really out done themselves again with the iK500 and iK501. Recently, my iPod speakers for my bathroom kicked the bucket so I was put in the position having to replace it. I have to say, the best thing that could have happened, happened. After tremendous tedious research, I decided to purchase the Kicker iK501. I love this little powerful beat box. Don’t be detoured by how petite it is. The iK501 has napoleon syndrome to say the least. I was a little hesitant because it broke the 200 dollar mark, but well worth every penny! If you are looking for a room pounding, ear ringing, heart skipping boom, and the best darn acoustic speaker system for the iPhone/iPod, look no further. This thing packs a punch like Mike Tyson in his teens! Only thing missing was a clock/alarm, but I am sure kicker will redesign the new model to incorporate one. I have tested iPod speakers, compatible with the iPhone from every imaginable local retailer around like Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart, and Sears. The closest thing that can somewhat hold its own with the iK501 cost over one hundred dollars more, and is not made by a company who’s expertise is sound acoustics. When I pulled it out of the box and took the system for a test run, I did not expect to spend over an hour testing the product. Kicker hit a home run with this little boom box. One last thing to include, I used to work in a car audio shop and these speaker can blow away anything Blows (Bose) has out for the iPod/iPhone!!!!! They could only dream of hitting the frequencies that the Kicker iK500 and iK501 units blast out! Well worth every penny!!!

Excellent5
The I-kick 501 far exceeded my expectations. The sound quality is excellent, and very loud for its size. The 6 inch subwoofer is an excellent and unique addition to the ikick that puts it in its own class of iPod/iPhone docks. It was worth every penny.

The best iPod system under $4005
Decided on the Kicker iK501 after reading about every review i could on iPod systems. I researched for 30 days looking just about everywhere for the best bang for my buck. I am NOT disappointed by this system. Far exceeds the Bose system I listened to. Overall sound quality is excellent. Off axis response is superb, vocals and highs are true, and bass far exceeded my expectations. This thing will POUND!! Perfect for outdoors or for easy listening. Charges the iPod while docked and the included remote functions well. Unit only operates on AC power, but I didn’t need battery power anyways. Systems that operate on battery seem flat and empty compared to AC power anyways.

I am using the system with the iPod nano (1st generation). Will work with iPod touch and iPhone as well.

Customer Reviews:

Yes, I still have VHS movies to watch5
Why would someone want to buy a video player that accepts both the latest Blu-Ray format and the perhaps obsolete VHS formats? Well, as someone who has their foot in both the past and the future, let me tell you why I love this player.

Yes, I can definitely appreciate the crispness and clarity of the high definition Blu-Ray format, and I wish to experience that format. But Blu-Ray discs are pricey, so I will likely choose to purchase only a few new select and favorite films in that format. I feel no need, and don’t have the wallet, to replace my entire film library in a Blu-Ray format.

I also have a collection of nearly 500 VHS tapes, most of them unwatched, which I mostly purchased in thrift stores. (current standard price for VHS tape in a thrift – $1) I also have a fair number of films that have not yet been released on DVD yet.

It is nice to have a player that will accept both VHS and Blu-Ray, along with standard DVD formats. No switching back and forth of cables, etc.

The DMP-BD70V upconversion of the VHS to 1080p is really quite amazing. My current television is a 42″ HDTV (one year ago it was a 19 inch color set) When I connected my previous standard VHS player to the HDTV, the picture quality, as expected, was quite poor, with much of the image being rather pixelated – it was quite painful and distracting to watch.

Then I hooked up the DMP-BD70V, and lone behold, the picture quality was much, much better – and very watchable. At first I almost thought that the VHS tape had been replaced by a DVD – the improvement was that great. There was no pixelation at all, and the colors were quite bright. The overall quality of the picture was much better than the picture obtained with my old 19″ color TV and VHS player. The upscaling features of the DMP-BD70V is almost as if a magician had waved his wand over your entire library of VHS tapes, and suddenly replaced them, Cinderella-like, with a much higher quality product.

There are some things you cannot do with a VHS tape. The picture size remains at the older 4:3 format – meaning there is considerable empty space at the left and right sides of the HDTV screen. You also won’t get the added commentary tracks that appear on DVD and Blu-Ray discs, but sometimes all one really wants to do is simply watch a movie, with no other frills involved.

For a few years, I will have several options for my home movie viewing. On one end, the $1 VHS tapes (upgraded to 1080p), in the middle the standard DVD format, and on the high side, the Blu-Ray format. This DMP-BD70V allows me to watch all three formats, and allows me to choose whether I want to pay $1, $15, or $30 for each movie format. That is what I call flexibility.

I did a comparison price check for the DMP-BD70V model, versus a similar model without the VHS tape compatibility – the difference was about $50 more. For me, it was well worth it.

Obviously those without VHS tapes do not need this DMP-BD70V model. But those who do have some older VHS tapes, and wish to still view them, will love this model.

Okay for a Second or Back-up Player3
If you want a combination blu ray/vhs player, then this is the only game in town so you are kind of stuck right now. However, I must point out a number of limitations:

1.) As many pointed out (some of which are poor souls who didn’t read carefully and bought without knowing this), there is no ability to record material on this. So if you record a weekly/daily program, you will still have to have a vhs or dvd recorder to do that.

2.) The component connection from this player to an HDTV did not work well with VHS tapes as the picture appeared all smudged. The tapes looked fine with an HDMI connection.

3.) I have trouble getting my remote sometimes to recognize I have a VHS tape in the player and often have to manually start the play. I have not had this problem when I want to play a disc, only VHS.

4.) This is not wireless, so to take advantage of the VIERA Cast if you are not close to your router, you must use an Ethernet adapter/access point (somewhere between $35 and $60 or more). I used an Asus WL-330gE purchased on sale at another site and chose the Ethernet adapater setting when configuring. I found this product worked perfectly with this blu ray player as it came with both the Ethernet cable as well either a plug-in power cord or a USB power cord. I used the USB power cord to plug into the USB slot on this blu ray player. Not only does using the USB power cord eliminate you having to plug another item into a power strip, but when you turn the player off, the USB power cord turns off as well, so you are not wasting electricity.

5.) Now, this is my biggest problem with this player. VIERA Cast. I specifically bought this player as a secondary blu ray for my bedroom (my primary player is in my family room), for two reasons– the vhs component (I record off my primary player, so didn`t need to record on this one) and the announcement last year that VIERA Cast would have Netflix. I currently stream Netflix through my other player and was looking forward to streaming in my bedroom with this one as Netflix lets you stream on a number of devices with the same account. I now read (which was NOT in the announcement I read last year), that Netflix will be on Panasonic Blu Rays ONLY built in 2010 or later. Why? Because they completely re-built the technical infrastructure within the blu rays and only those with the new infrastructure will host Netflix. I guess they used up their “old parts” making this player figuring the VHS crowd wouldn’t be interested in the newest technology.

I don’t quite get the “usefulness” of VIERA Cast. The weather and stock parts are next to useless–if I really wanted to know the weather, I’d simply click to one of numerous weather stations that I get over the air. With regards to the stock market updates–I’d go to something on the internet as I would want to track my specific holding not just look at a generic stock market update. With NetCast (on the LG BD 90 blu ray player I have) I get YouTube, Netflix streaming (obviously have to have a Netflix account to take advantage of), as well as Vudu and CinemaNow that have pay per view rentals (most with option to buy). You do not get Amazon Video on Demand on the LG player as you do this player, but I would wonder how many movies Amazon might have that the other movie rental view options would not.

So, my best take on this player is if you need to record programs, or want to stream Netflix, do NOT buy this player. If you need to connect wirelessly, you must factor into the cost of this player an Ethernet adapter.

Am I keeping mine? Yes, because I bought at super sale price (around 165 dollars), so the cost of adding an Ethernet adapter was not prohibitive. It does eliminate the need for a vhs in my bedroom, and since I record through a dvd/vhs recorder in my family room, the lack of recording in this player does not affect me. However, I must now either choose not to stream Netflix to my bedroom, or buy a Roku.

If I do read that Panasonic has decided to add Netflix to the players with the “old” infrastructure (they are receiving some complaints obviously), I will update my review. If someone else reads such an announcement, please post a comment to my review with the source of the announcement.

Thank you, Panasonic5
As far as I know this is the only combo of this kind on the market, and I couldn’t be happier. Despite the outdated format and my dwindling videotape collection, I wanted to replace my old Magnavox VCR instead of abandoning VHS altogether. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that I not only could still do that, I could additionally upgrade to Blu without having to find more shelf space or another power outlet. Since it isn’t really all that versatile otherwise, this player is a snap to hook up. There are no inputs (except LAN) and the outputs consist of HDMI, component and composite video, with analog and digital audio (fiber optic only). It only comes with a set of RCA analog audio/video cables, so plan ahead. I am only using the HDMI video and optical audio and it plays discs flawlessly. Pop in a videotape and it automatically switches to VHS mode and reformats itself to 4:3, while still outputting only through the digital ports. Yes, this is only a player–I prefer DVD-RAM for recording these days, anyway–but if you want the ultimate in all-in-one playback, including USB devices and SD cards, this device is for you.

Format-Friendly
The DMP-BD70V distinguishes itself as the world’s first dual deck VHS-Blu-ray player, providing the consumer with a video product that features multi-format playback allowing the user to play VHS, CD, DVD and 1080p high definition Blu-ray Discs. The BD70V allows for premium 1080p up-conversion for all video formats.

VIERA CAST
VIERA CAST technology is now available in Panasonic’s 2009 Blu-ray players. The internet enabled technology lets the consumer access the internet without the need of either an external box or a PC and enjoy entertainment from sites like Amazon VOD, YouTube, Google’s Picasa Web Album, Bloomberg and more. The DMP-BD70V also includes an SD Memory card slot and USB slot, so you can view and share both digital still images and HD video recorded with an HD camcorder in the AVCHD format.

4:4:4 Technology
In order to produce the ultimate picture quality, Panasonic’s Blu-ray players employ high precision 4:4:4 signal technology, which working in tandem with PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus processes each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the horizontal direction, to compliment vertical direction processing. P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing for HD) is another technology that contributes to the superior picture quality of the Blu-ray players. P4HD processes more than 15 billion pixels per second and applies the optimal processing to every pixel. Panasonic’s Blu-ray players further utilize 16-level motion detection to categorize the image motion of each pixel into one of 16 levels; diagonal processing to detect diagonals and correct the pixels accordingly; 1080p up-conversion to up-convert content recorded in the 480i/p or 720p format to 1080p. The Blu-ray players also provide 1080/24p output, thereby reproducing cinema images from a Blu-ray Disc and DVD in their original 24p form with no need for conversion. This allows the user to enjoy cinema images in the same format used in cinema with a 1080/24p compatible TV.

Lower Power Consumption
Panasonic’s 2009 Blu-ray players use Auto Power Stand-By, a function that automatically turns off the player when you return to TV operation using the VIERA Link menu. In addition, the Stand-by Power Save automatically turns off the player’s Quick Start function. When VIERA is turned on, Quick Start also turns on. In addition, the development of the UniPhier single chip LSI makes it possible to pack an entire video signal processing circuit onto a single chip. This helps lower power consumption, reduces the number of parts needed and allows for a more compact design.

Customer Reviews:

The only Ultra-Compact Photo/Video Camera on market5
The only ultra-compact camera on the market that doubles as a camcorder! Casio cameras are the only ones supporting MPEG-4 video recording. That means 1 hour of 640×480 video per 1 Gb of storage!!! Competitors can do only 6 minutes. (Mpeg4 offers 10 times better compression over Mpeg1 that other cameras use).
This model also has a dedicated video record button. (my previous Casio camra I had to wade through menus instead).
That means on a cheap 16GB SD card you can get 16 hours of video, or a photo/video mix.
Other thing I liked was form factor: the height is lower than previous casio cameras, but it is not as slim, with flat bottom, which means you can put it down on fence or car roof for time-delayed photo, and it will not topple over. Don’t need to drag around a tripod.

Good Camera4
I did a lot of research before purchasing this camera. This is my 3rd point and shoot, and ultimately it is my second Casio. I thought the first time I bought one I was going to get hosed on camera capability but was looking forward to finding out how to conducting complex mathematical equations. I was actually very pleased with my first one, and ultimately ended up going with the Casio Z250 to replace it. It is very easy to use, and takes excellent pictures. The size is perfect and the extra large lcd is awesome. The best part of the camera is the “Best Images” features, which quickly adjusts your camera settings to take certain types of pictures (ie water, dog, action, poloroid, scenic, night, etc.) It has many of the same features that more expensive cameras have for a lower price. I would recommend this camera over all others currently on the market in its price range.

Nice camera4
This is a replacement for a previous Casio that I dropped while camping. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was that the only thing I find annoying is that you have to remove the battery to charge it. My previous camera had a dock that i charged from. It takes great photo’s and easy to navigate. Large screen to view photo’s and light weight.

Customer Reviews:

Defines a near perfect MTF graph for lens quality5
Before purchasing this lens you should read some literature. You don’t need to be a lens expert – but know what “MTF” means. MTF is modulation transfer function. It is a qualty by which lenses are judged. The more linear the plot, the better the odds you’ve bought a winner. Olympus and Cannon both publish their MTF plots of their “BETTER” quality lenses. They don’t publish the plots of the “included in the box” lenses. For good reason. You can analyze them on a machine if you have a lab and discover they resemble a rollercoaster and not a horizontal line like you would prefer.

Google MTF LENS modulation transfer function and you’ll be on your way – then visit OLY’s website and click on the MTF curves on this lens. You’ll see why it is so well thought of.

Now let’s talk Zoom. Remember your old 35mm camera. If you wanted a closeup, you walked towards the person. A wide angle meant walking backwards, mindful of the pool, traffic, etc. The zoom lens eliminated some of this to the extent of its focal length. This is not a zoom lens. It is called a PRIME lens. PRIME = opposite of ZOOM. It’s like that old friend on your first 35mm camera. But with a little under the hood.

This is called a macro lens. That does not mean it only can shoot closeups. It will focus from 6″ to infinity. For $35 or so you can buy a 3 piece set of magnifiers from Hoya or Tiffen – they screw on like filters but magnify the image in 1, 2, and 4 diopter power. Like using a loupe to view a stone, they help you see the fine detail. The microprinting in the new $20 bill is easy to photograph with this lens. You can see things not visable to the naked eye with it.

Finally – as I mentioned the focus does cover close up to infinity like any good lens (just unscrew those magnifiers used to photo your stamp collection). But you will see that while most lenses (in meters) will have a readout of 1, 2, 5, 9, 15, 25, infinity in meters – this lens starts way down at 0.22 m (22 cm!) – the next number is about 0.24 m. The point is there is a wide range of focus space down close to the lens below a meter, then 1, 2, 3 meters. For closeups this can’t be beat.

This is not to say you can’t use this lens like old’faithful on your first 35mm camera. I’ve shot entire photoshoots with this just stepping back a couple times to frame the shot how I wanted it. I also switch to aperature mode (A) on the Oly Evolt and stopped down the lens to F10 outside or with the FL-50 flash. My depth of field was dramatic – everything came into sharp focus with the crosshairs in the middle.

Printing the images on 24″ wide photo paper and a HP designjet drafting/photo printer gave the final satisfaction. This is one awesome lens. No zoom, but pictures so sharp and detailed with contrast unheard of before that when I run out to catch a good photo, this lens is normally on my camera. And I also have the 50-200 ED zoom. The 50 ED PRIME lens will outperform the 50 zoom under most occasions.

It’s a starter lens, a quality lens (mid level in the OLY 3 tier quality system), a macro lens, and best of all a razor sharp lens that maintains contrast (you normally give up one for the other). There is a lot of glass inside this piece, and good glass at that. I advise against the f=35 mm macro lens, as it is in the LOW quality group from oly. If you need a 1:1 scale, consider this lens with the extention tube for a little more and you’ll be close to 1:1 there.

Like all of the “quality” group of lenses in OLY’s lens plan, this has a focus meter on it to tell you where you are focusing, or to aid in manual focusing. Mine spends most of its time on the camera – I’m sure you will enjoy printing photos from it as well. Shoot at F/10 and focus is almost not an issue at all in wide spaces. Inside, add the FL50 flash and shoot F/10 as well. You’ll be happy with the outcome.

One last note about flashes – you’ll eventually want the ring flash for macro work. Undocumented is that the ring flash includes 4 modeling lights with a 3 minute timer on them. To put the macro ring flash on the macro lens requires a ring flash adapter FR-1 available separately for about $95. It’s bucks, I realize, but it does have a simple two prong bayonet mount to a ring cut into the lens – so removing the ring flash is a breeze. The ring flash (minus modeling lights) has a GN of 36 and is roughly equivalent to the FL-36, except that shadows are kept to an absolute minimum since the flash wraps around the lens. I use it for closeups and even modeling shots – a great lens/flash combo with the FR-1 adapter. Using the modeling lights you can keep the flash reflection out of the picture!

Simply a perfect lens5
I don’t know of any other way to say it. I cannot find any fault with this lens. It is tack sharp edge-to-edge, even in the far corners, even at f/2, especially close up. The bokeh is superb, it looks great and creamy smooth. It’s also fast and just as good at f/2 as f/8 — literally no difference in sharpness. Incredible.

It literally is a perfect lens.

Makes for great portraits (probably my favorite use for the lens) due to the 100mm equivalent focal length and the great depth-of-field control and appealing out-of-focus rendition.

Makes for great macros, for the same reasons but up close. Add the extension tube for true 1:1, otherwise 1:2 is great for most everything close other than “true macro.”

My only complaint is that it’s just a tad long for general use – 4/3 really needs a Zuiko 25mm normalish prime (as in, something cheaper than the Leica 25mm f/1.4, which is also an excellent lens) of the same quality as this lens.

But for what it is — a 100mm-equivalent lens — it is, without question, optically perfect. Don’t even hesitate to buy it, you’ll wish you had got it sooner.

(Edit: I know I have said nothing negative in this review, and that may lead you to think it’s “unhelpful”. So, for the record, the biggest problem with the lens is the focusing speed, which is a little sub-par, and makes a strange noise. It’s not terrible, just sometimes gets in the way. Also, in low light, if you miss focus it can go all the way out to macro and back in before it finds it, as there is no focus limiter. Not a huge problem, just know how to focus on contrast or use MF in pitch black. That said, the most helpful thing I can say about the lens is that it’s superb and a must-buy, sorry if that comes across as unhelpful ;-)

Quite Possibly the Best Medium Telephoto Macro Lens for a Digital SLR5
Among the finest lenses which Olympus produced for its OM manual focusing SLR system were its Zuiko 50mm f2 and 90mm f2 lenses. Both lenses earned lavish praise from critics and users, of whom many regarded these lenses as among the finest of their kind. Indeed, both lenses were compared favorably to the Leica R and Contax Zeiss 35mm SLR macro lenses. For example, in at least one review, I read that the 50mm lens was as fine a performer as the venerable Leica 50mm Summicron M lens, with excellent contrast and resolution at all apertures, especially wide open.

Now for its new digital E-series cameras, Olympus has introduced a 50mm f2 macro lens which follows in the wake of its legendary predecessors, offering this time ED glass for maximum contrast and resolution at all apertures. The June 2006 issue of Popular Photography has an exemplary review of this lens, noting that it is indeed a superlative performer, among the finest macro lenses currently available for digital SLRs. It also notes that the magnification ratio of this lens without an additional focusing tube is actually 1:1.6, NOT 1:2 as stated in the lens’s manual. And since Olympus adheres to a 4:3 image ratio, then the equivalent focal length of this 50mm f2 lens for a 35mm film SLR camera is 90mm. Those interested in both macro photography and using a superb portrait lens for head-and-shoulder portraits, will find this 50mm lens an important addition to their Olympus E-series kit.

Amazon.com Product Description
One of the brightest Zuiko digital lenses is the Olympus 50mm f/2.0 medium macro lens. Offering an equivalent to 100mm on a 35mm camera, the lens boasts a maximum magnification ratio of 0.52x along with a minimum focusing distance of 9.45 inches, letting you get nice and close to your subject. The extra-low-dispersion (ED) glass element, meanwhile, reduces chromatic aberrations to deliver superior image quality with high resolution and good contrast. Add an EX-25 extension tube and you can focus to approximately 1x, equivalent to 2x on a 35mm camera. All Olympus lenses carry a one-year warranty.
